Domain: Sustainable Village DevelopmentProject Name: Gramarthan: Watershed Management - Water Security for Sustainable VillagesInception: 2018

Under the Water Conservation and Rural Development domain, Deepastambha Charitable Trust leads Watershed Management - Water Security for Sustainable Villages—a scientific, community-driven rural transformation initiative. The programme restores ecological balance in drought-prone and water-stressed landscapes by focusing on rainwater harvesting, surface water retention, and deep aquifer recharge.

Rather than relying on ad-hoc civil works, the project adopts a ridge-to-valley Watershed framework. Interventions blend geospatial terrain analysis and scientific drainage modeling with indigenous community wisdom. By engaging Gram Panchayats and local farming households directly in site selection, excavation, and long-term asset custody, the programme secures sustainable water supplies for drinking, protective irrigation, livestock, and drought mitigation.

Watershed Management

SDG Mapping

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger (Enhancing crop yields, multi-cropping capacity, and food security through reliable irrigation)
  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation (Revitalizing local groundwater tables, village wells, and dependable year-round drinking water)
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth (Protecting rural agrarian livelihoods and curbing distress seasonal migration)
  • SDG 13: Climate Action (Strengthening grassroots ecological resilience against erratic monsoons and recurring drought)
  • SDG 15: Life on Land (Arresting topsoil erosion, preventing silt run-off, and restoring degraded catchment basins)

Highlights and Key Achievements

  • 100+ Crore Litres Annual Recharge Potential: Groundwater recharge capacity created across treated micro-catchments.
  • 35,000+ Rural Beneficiaries Reached: Direct socio-economic coverage across farming families and rural households.
  • 10+ Villages Transformed: Comprehensive ridge-to-valley treatments completed across water-stressed districts.
  • Multi-Structure Engineering: Constructed and rejuvenated Continuous Contour Trenches (Deep CCT), check dams, earthen nala bunds, farm ponds, and specialized recharge shafts.
  • Regenerative Desilting: Restored aging water bodies while enriching local farmlands with excavated, nutrient-dense silt.

Various Initiatives : Impact Created

  • Ridge-to-Valley Earthworks and Deep Groundwater Recharge:Impact: Executes Deep Continuous Contour Trenches (Deep CCT) and subsurface recharge shafts along natural slopes, arresting high-velocity surface run-off and channeling millions of litres into deep subterranean aquifers.
  • Stream Rejuvenation, Deepening and Desilting:Impact: Widens, deepens, and clears decades of accumulated silt from streams and check dams, dramatically restoring reservoir capacities and returning mineral-rich silt to local agricultural fields.
  • Decentralized Surface Water Storage:Impact: Constructs and reinforces cement nala bunds, check dams, and individual farm ponds (shet tale), retaining water well past post-monsoon months for livestock and rabi-season crops.
  • Community-Led Water Stewardship and Governance:Impact: Institutionalizes Village Water Committees alongside Gram Panchayats, ensuring democratic planning, equitable distribution, and zero maintenance neglect of water assets.

Geography

  • Focal State: Maharashtra (prioritizing arid, rain-shadow, and ecologically fragile rural zones).
  • Project Villages and Districts:
    • Pune District: Ranje (Tal. Bhor); Pabal (Tal. Shirur); Ranjane, Kondgaon, Khamgaon, and Ambed (Tal. Velhe).
    • Dharashiv District: Belgaon (P) (Tal. Bhum).
    • Satara District: Pimpari (Tal. Maan).
    • Ratnagiri District: Panchanadi (Tal. Dapoli); Golap (Dist. Ratnagiri).

Why With Us?

  • Ridge-to-Valley Scientific Precision: Site selections rely on geospatial mapping, slope analysis, and drainage calculations to maximize water retention per rupee invested.
  • Community Ownership from Day One: Farmers and local Gram Panchayats co-plan and co-execute all interventions, ensuring water assets are sustained and maintained locally.
  • Measurable, Auditable Hydrological Metrics: Quantifies surface capacity addition, aquifer replenishment volumes, and household coverage for clear impact tracking.
  • CSR Partnership Ready: Robust governance, verified documentation, milestone reporting, and complete alignment with Schedule VII CSR guidelines.
  • Durable Climate Resilience: Directly addresses climate vulnerabilities by building local water buffers that withstand dry spells and monsoon delays.

Testimonials

"Desilting the aging check dam has dramatically restored its water-holding capacity, recharging groundwater and ensuring critical irrigation for our farmers. Sharing the excavated, nutrient-rich silt directly enriched agricultural lands across our village. We express our deepest gratitude to Deepastambha Charitable Trust and R. M. Tulpule Charitable Trust for this impactful initiative."
